Describe: HTML to text, and selective tag removal. This utility removes some or all of the tags from a HTML source file.
Options allow classes of tags to be removed, sections of code to be stripped out, or tag manipulations to be performed. For example you can remove all FONT tags, or tags added by MS Office applications, strip out the HEAD or any SCRIPT sections, convert tags to lower case and replace hyperlinks by their display values. HTML entities such as %26nbsp; can be replaced by their ASCII equivalents.
When all tags are removed. the program becomes a fully fledged HTML-to-text converter. It will output the document as text, preserving the headings, lists, tables of the original document and turning them into suitable text formats. Text will be laid out as faithfully as possible to the original document, within the constraints of your desired page width. The software can cope with tables (including nested tables). Hyperlinks are replaced by the display text, and where the URL is to a universal resource, you can opt to have a reference number added after the text, and a reference table containing the original URLs added at the end of the document, so that this information is not lost.
Options allow you to dictate the page width of the output, and to add custom headers and footers to the output text. For works of fiction, options exist to intelligently format sections of "dialogue", so that each new speaker starts on a new line.
The utility supports wildcards and drag and drop operation, making it well suited to whatever mode of conversion you prefer. Program options can be saved to a "policy" file for reuse in later conversions, allowing you to define regular styles for different types of conversions.
After conversion, results can be viewed in a browser or text editor (depending on the type of conversion you've done).
